IKEA today announced that they will launch a new miracle car April 1 2009 here.
The IKEA France site comes with a spokesperson hawking a covered environmental car, looking eerily similar to the launch of the Tata Nano.
IKEA has a history of doing amazing PR stunts. We did a few like the giant footprints to market furniture for children here.
The IKEA car comes with the WWF seal of approval, a first ever. This is going to be the best April Fool's PR earthquake in the world in a couple of weeks. In today's world, where the best advertising maximizes the moment, this is a great strategy that's bound to spread fast.
But brilliant as this is, because IKEA do their marketing on a country-by-country basis, and this campaign is most likely developed by IKEA France's French agency, it won't get the kind of HUGE global breakthrough it might have if the site would have been done in English.
But on a more serious note, the idea of a DIY automobile isn't so foolish after all.
