Welcome to Comiket - the fastest growing thing out there. ComicMarket happens every year in August in Tokyo. It's where attendees dress up as characters of popular manga comics and digital games. The event istelf is basically for two kinds of people coming together. Those people who want to sell original manga costumes that they create by themselves (called as `do-jin-shi') , and those people who want to buy them. Most are limited edition (b/w 2-3000 issues) so for keen fans they are very precious. And because lots of people gather there, it is also a good opportunity for the people who want to show their hand-made costumes (either based on exisitng mangas or totally original) to a wide selection of the public. So Comiket is both a show time for costume makers and lots of manics who love to take photos of these kind of freaky colorful costumes....a good friend of mine described it as a complete harmony of the weirdest people! An even that is getting bigger and bigger every year.
Here is a news program about the last year's Comiket on youtube. It's all in japanese ; in the first part, it reports the number of people gathered at the event last year exceeded 410,000 people and the keen fans were waiting for its open for hours under the burning sunshine, to rush to get their favorite limited mangas. around the time counter 4:20 in the film it shows some people in the costumes that they created by themselves. This is the youtube video of it all happening last year. Wow.
And this one site has attracted almost 15 million visitors.
