Gene Pressman is one of America's true Mavericks. He inherited one of America's most respected department stores known for quality at a low cost. Gene envisioned an icon for the world to behold. He built it and today Barneys New York remains the preeminent department store for cool style and fashion on the planet. Today, a new book, Chasing Cool written by Gene and fellow New Yorker Noah Kerner was launched in New York. Chasing Cool includes interviews with more than seventy of today’s most respected living cultural visionaries including Russell Simmons (chairman and CEO of Rush Communications), Ian Schrager (hotelier), Tony Hawk (Pro skateboarder), Bob Pittman (cofounder of MTV), as well as Christina Aguilera, Clive Davis, Ed Limato, Marc Jacobs, Marc Newson, Talib Kweli, Richard Meier, DJ Premier, Sofia Coppola, Tiki Barber, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang and Ahmet Ertegun.. I've just ordered my copy. Will let you know my thoughts once I've had a look. But knowing Gene, it's going to be big. Here is an interview with Gene.
Talking about books of inspiration and influence, just in the middle of a book given to me by a dear friend entitled: "The meaning of life". I was grabbed from the first paragraph and haven't surfaced yet. Terry Eagleton, who is John Edward Taylor, Professor of English at the University of Manchester, is the author. He looks like a hedgehog and was recently featured in the New York Times Sunday Magazine. WELL worth it.
This is a great book; I have read it and already applied some of the things I've learned from it to my personal and business life. I'd highly recommend anyone and everyone to read it. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the chapter that talks about “growing your pond”, it’s an idea I had never really thought about or heard before. It’s very interesting that Grey Goose has such a premium image, and the majority of young people consider it the #1 in vodka. I enjoyed the story of the blind taste test and how Grey Goose was in fact not the #1, but yet it still sold as if it were….It’s amazing at how good marketing can persuade the buyers.
